Time blocking is a wonderful way to manage your time and energy. Time blocking can be used to greatly increase your productivity, support your priority business goals and strengthen your well-being!
Even the most basic time blocking has great value in that it supports you in setting a time to focus on a single project so you can bring clarity, focus and efficiency to that project, all of which result in much greater quality and productivity.
However, there’s more good news! You can bring even more productivity to your time blocking by incorporating what I call Flex Blocks.
Power Tip #1: Use Flex Blocks
Flex blocks are time slots in your calendar that are not assigned to a specific project or task. They are a part of your time blocking strategy. These flex blocks can be used to work on projects that required more time than you allotted. Can you already feel the stress relief?
If you don’t need the scheduled flex block to catch up on work, use that time to make progress on another project, to network or to simply take a little extra time and rejuvenate. It’s much easier to find a way to use ‘extra’ time productively than to try to fit extra work into an already overstuffed schedule. It’s also the smarter way if you want to bring balance and calm to your day rather than chaos and stress.
Power Tip #2: Align Your Work with Your Energy Level
If you want to superpower your time blocking even more, be open to rearranging your time blocks. Are you feeling extra creative? Then jump to a time block for a project that uses your creative side. Feeling a bit tired or otherwise not on your A-game energy-wise or cognitively? Then go to a time block for a project that is more process or task oriented. Are you feeling high-energy? Then what project can you add the most value to at that time? By aligning your time blocks with your energy and cognition level, you bring a whole new level of benefit and productivity to your time blocking strategy.
Before you go and create your time block schedule, there’s one last important tip. Be sure to set boundaries around your time blocks. The more you adhere to and protect your time blocks from interruptions and distractions, the more value they offer. And in my book, that’s an A+ for productivity!
